Emily Belsey

Writer Extraordinaire

Today a new sun rises for me; everything lives, everything is animated, everything seems to speak to me of my passion, everything invites me to cherish it.

- Anne de Lenclos

Some thoughts from the Critics’ Choice Awards:

…Is that, wait, yes, it IS one of our tour guests in the stands outside the theatre! Wow, he’s being interviewed on tv! And meeting Nikki Blonsky!

…Funniest sound bite so far: “Ideally, as an actor, it would be great if the writers would return and the critics would go on strike.” – Steve Zahn

…Sad that screenwriter Diablo Cody couldn’t be there to get her award. If I were in her position, I’d be really tempted to cross my own picket line and go to the ceremony and accept my award. Who knows the when she’ll be nominated again.

…Yay! Nikki Blonsky won best young actress!! I love that her mom was reminding her who to thank. Ever the mother! :-)

…I really don’t get what the big deal is about the movie Atonement.

…FINALLY!! Comedies have their own category. And Juno wins. Ok. Maybe I should go see Juno. But honestly, Ellen Page scares me. Did anyone see her in Hard Candy? I’m still very scared by that movie, and Ellen Page was pure evil in that movie.

D.L. Hughley‘s jokes aren’t that funny. Just kinda proving that the writers really need to get back to work.

…And how many times do we have to show Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt sitting together??? We get it, they’re together. Got it. Now move on. Oh, you want to show us that Brad Pitt looks his age now? Yeah, got that too. (He’s 44.)

…This just in: The Golden Globes ceremony has been cancelled and instead will just be a televised hour-long press conference. I think I’m ok with that.

…Nikki Blonsky is really short. (She’s 4’10”.)

…YAY!!! Enchanted won for best family film!

…I’m a little bored right now with all the nominations for the “big” awards of Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Picture. I think I’m bored because I haven’t seen ANY of the movies nominated. Shocking, I know. But here’s why: most of the movies nominated (and the actors in them) came out in theaters this fall and winter. I was busy watching TV instead.

…My kitty is so cute when she’s sleeping!

Okay, I’m predicting a pretty dull awards season this year. Go figure, my first year living in Hollywood and everyone goes on strike and boycotts things.

Luckily, there’s plenty of other TV to watch and I’ll be tuning into the new season of America’s Next Top Model and the new series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

  1. Juno was great. Don’t worry, it’s nothing like Hard Candy. It’s a comedy with heart.

  2. We also really enjoyed Juno. It’s very well written and the characters are quite believable. We laughed a lot. We went to see it on Friday night after we got home from So Cal to find we had no power at our house–very cold and dark. Then we got a phone call from Steve saying that Jesse was stuck in the airport on his way to visit Bree in Reno. So we took him to the movie with us. He laughed too.

  3. I haven’t seen Hard Candy, so my only thought of Ellen Page is tempered by her portrayal of Kitty Pryde in X-Men 3 (one of the few not terrible parts of the film) and her appearance on Letterman where she impressed me as being surprisingly naturally witty (such a refreshing thing for a young actress, eh?). Now I’ll avoid Hard Candy. :)
